Weston Creek Congregation

Background

The Weston Creek Presbyterian Church recommenced in July 1987, by the holding of regular Sunday Services in the Holder Primary School Hall. In 1991, the Congregation moved to the Weston Primary School Hall, and finally on 28 August 1994 , moved into the permanent Worship Centre at Mahony Court , Weston.

The site for the Worship Centre was purchased from the ACT Government in late 1990. Resulting from the strong sustained commitment of the Congregation, the construction of the building was commenced during March 1994, and completed in August 1994, utilising some $80,000 of Congregational funds, and a $150,000 loan from the Trustees of the Presbyterian Church of Australia (ACT) Property Trust. The repayment of the loan was completed in August 2005.

It is the firm intention of the Congregation to increase its membership through strengthening its outreach and involvement in the Weston Creek community. We are a caring and friendly congregation, which accepts its responsibilities and obligations readily and positively.

In addition to the Worship Service each Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas Day, a Sunday School meets each Sunday during school terms, and a Creche is available. After each Sunday Service, everyone is welcome to have a cup of tea or coffee. Communion is held quarterly.

A Playgroup every Monday morning at 10 am , an Op-Shop & Do Drop-Inn Centre is open every Tuesday morning from 9:30am till 12 noon , and a regular series of Bible Studies are held throughout the year.

Baptisms and Weddings can be arranged through the Church Offices at St Andrews , State Circle , Forrest on 6295 3457.

We participated in the Canberra-wide 'Jesus All about Life' Program. The Congregation is actively planning additional outreach activities, and if you have a suggestion to contribute, we will be most pleased to hear from you.

What is a Presbyterian?

The name 'Presbyterian' means a church governed by elders, all, including the minister, of equal rank. Elders, together with the minister, function as a "Session". From the Session's membership, representative Elders are appointed to serve on the higher courts of the Church, such as the Presbytery, State General Assemblies, and the National Assembly. The Presbyterian Church acknowledges no one human as head, preferring the biblical instruction to confess Jesus Christ as its only King and Head.

We are historic.

The Presbyterian Church gladly identifies with the basic Christian beliefs taught by Jesus Christ, and His first apostles, summarised in the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds of the early church, and upheld by Christian churches down the ages.

We are contemporary.

We believe the Bible's message is timeless and relevant to people in every generation. In our worship services, we seek to maintain a simple format with an emphasis on congregational participation, and the teaching and application of the Bible in the power of the Holy Spirit to the needs of today's living.

We are biblical.

We accept the Bible as the Word of God - and our final authority in all areas of the church's belief and practices. To aid people in understanding the teachings of the Bible, Presbyterians accept the Westminster Confession of Faith read in the light of the Declaratory Statement dated 24 July 1901 , as a confession of faith. We do not require church members to subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms, but it does represent the position of the church and the faith of the Ministers and Elders.

We are open.

The words 'open' and 'closed', when describing churches, refers to their willingness to accept Christians of other churches to their communion service, While we believe that only those who have received eternal life by faith in the Lord Jesus as their personal Saviour and Lord have a right to come to the Lord's table, we put the responsibility on the person to judge for themselves whether or not they partake of the Lord's supper.

The Weston Creek Presbyterian Church is a Congregation within the Pastoral Charge of St Andrew Canberra A.C.T.
